Apple Pay Is Now Available in India: Supported Cards, Setup, Payments and UPI Difference
After years of waiting, Apple Pay has launched in India. But this is a limited opening, not a switch that instantly makes every Indian debit card, credit card or UPI account work in Apple Wallet. Here is exactly who can use it today, how the payment works and what remains unsupported.
What exactly launched?
Apple Pay turns an eligible payment card into a secure payment method on a compatible Apple device. In a physical shop, you authenticate on your iPhone or Apple Watch and hold it near a contactless-enabled card terminal. In a participating app or website, you choose the Apple Pay button and confirm the transaction without typing the card number into that checkout.
Apple’s India Apple Pay page is live, and its country-support page now lists India. That is a real launch, but availability has two separate parts: Apple must support the country, and your individual card issuer and card type must support provisioning. A working Wallet app or an iPhone with NFC does not, by itself, make an unsupported bank card eligible.
For users accustomed to QR-code payments, this may feel like a new way to pay at an Indian store. Technically it is a different rail: the payment is charged to an eligible credit card through its card network. It does not transfer money directly from the bank account linked to your UPI ID.
Apple Pay India supported banks and cards at launch
Apple’s current Indian issuer list names Axis Bank for eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Apple warns that an issuer may not support every card type, so even an Axis card should be checked if Wallet rejects it. The bank list can expand; the status below is a snapshot of 30 September 2026, not a permanent compatibility promise.
| Card or account | Launch-day status in India | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible Axis Bank Visa credit card | Supported category | Try adding it in Wallet and complete issuer verification. |
| Eligible Axis Bank Mastercard credit card | Supported category | Try adding it in Wallet and complete issuer verification. |
| Axis Bank RuPay credit card | Not listed as supported | Do not assume that “Axis” alone makes the card eligible. |
| Axis Bank debit card | Not listed in the launch issuer category | Wait for issuer confirmation of the exact card type. |
| Other Indian banks’ cards | Not on Apple’s launch-day India list | Check Apple’s updated list or ask your issuer. |
| UPI ID or bank account alone | Not an Apple Pay card | Continue using a UPI app for bank-to-bank QR payments. |
Visa and Mastercard refer to the card networks, not a guarantee that every card with those marks will work. The issuing bank and individual card’s eligibility matter. Reports about future partner banks are not the same as a confirmed rollout. We will update this guide when Apple’s official list changes.
How to set up Apple Pay in India
You need a compatible Apple device with current software, an Apple Account signed in, a device passcode or biometric authentication, and an eligible card. Keep the bank’s registered mobile number and verification method available: the issuer may require additional approval during setup.
Add an eligible card on iPhone
- Open the Wallet app and tap the + button.
- Select Debit or Credit Card (even though the currently supported India category is eligible credit cards), then tap Continue.
- Bring the card close to the iPhone if prompted, scan it, or enter details manually.
- Read and accept the card issuer’s terms if presented.
- Complete any verification requested by Axis Bank. Wait for Wallet to show that the card is ready.
You may also be able to begin from the bank’s app if it offers an “Add to Apple Wallet” flow. Follow the bank’s current instructions; the issuer decides whether a particular card can be added.
Add it to Apple Watch
On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app, select My Watch → Wallet & Apple Pay → Add Card, and complete verification. Adding a card to iPhone does not necessarily mean it has already been activated for your Watch; check the Watch’s Wallet before leaving the physical card behind.
How to pay in a store, app or website
At a contactless card terminal
Look for a contactless symbol and confirm that the merchant accepts your card network. On a Face ID iPhone, double-click the side button, authenticate and hold the top of the phone near the reader until the payment completes. On Apple Watch, double-click its side button, choose the card if necessary and hold the display near the terminal. Follow the terminal’s prompts if a transaction needs an additional step. A QR-only merchant with no suitable card terminal is not automatically an Apple Pay merchant.
In apps and on websites
When a participating merchant displays an Apple Pay button, select it, review the amount and shipping details, then authenticate. Supported third-party browser checkouts can also present a code to scan with a compatible iPhone before confirmation. Availability depends on the merchant and device; do not assume every website offering card payments has enabled Apple Pay.
Apple’s India page describes iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad use. In-person tap-to-pay is the iPhone or Watch experience; an iPad is chiefly useful for eligible app and online checkouts. Apple’s broader international support documentation mentions Mac, but local device flows and merchant support should be checked before relying on a Mac purchase in India.
Apple Pay versus UPI: the difference Indian users need to know
| Question | Apple Pay in India at launch | UPI |
|---|---|---|
| What funds the payment? | An eligible Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card | A linked bank account or eligible UPI-linked credit instrument, according to the UPI app and issuer |
| Typical store experience | Authenticated tap at a compatible contactless card reader | Often a merchant QR scan; other UPI modes vary by app and terminal |
| Can I add my UPI ID to Wallet? | No launch-day support for a UPI ID as an Apple Pay card | UPI ID is used within a UPI-enabled app |
| Does Apple Pay replace UPI? | No; it is another checkout option for eligible cardholders | Remains useful where QR/bank-account payments are preferred |
This distinction prevents a frustrating setup attempt. If your local tea shop has only a UPI QR code, Apple Pay’s contactless card payment will not turn that QR into a tap transaction. Conversely, a store with a functioning NFC terminal accepting your card network may let you pay without opening a separate QR app. The two methods can coexist.
Security, privacy and fees
Apple Pay uses a device-specific payment number and a unique transaction code rather than giving a merchant your underlying card number during a purchase. On-device Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode authorises payment. This can reduce exposure of card details at a checkout, although it does not remove the need to monitor statements or report suspicious transactions to the bank.
If your device is lost, Apple says Find My → Lost Mode can suspend Apple Pay, and you can remotely remove payment cards. Keep Find My enabled and know how to reach your issuer if a card needs to be blocked. Apple says it does not charge users a separate fee for Apple Pay purchases. The card issuer’s normal interest, foreign-exchange fees or other card charges can still apply; verify your card terms, particularly before paying abroad.
Apple’s India page says in-store payments with iPhone or Watch can work without Wi-Fi or mobile data because the device talks to the terminal over NFC. A merchant’s terminal and the wider payment system still have to complete the transaction. The Wallet transaction display may update after the device reconnects.
Why can’t I add my card to Apple Pay?
First check the exact issuer and network: an Axis Bank RuPay card or another bank’s Visa card is not the launch-day combination Apple lists. Then update your device, sign in to your Apple Account, enable a passcode, reopen Wallet and follow the issuer’s verification request. If the “Add Card” flow declines the card or never completes, contact Axis Bank using an official number or its app. Apple says card eligibility and approval are decided by the issuer.
Also remember that a card may be enabled on one device but not another. If iPhone payments work and Watch payments do not, open the Watch app’s Wallet & Apple Pay settings and confirm the card appears there. If a store transaction fails, ask whether contactless card payment and your card network are accepted; a contactless symbol on an inactive terminal does not guarantee acceptance.
What does this launch mean for app developers and merchants?
For Indian app makers, Apple Pay is an additional card-based checkout option where a payment provider and merchant account support it. It can reduce typing at checkout and provide an authenticated payment sheet, but it is not a drop-in replacement for UPI or an automatic switch in every app. Developers should check their gateway’s India support, test real eligible cards, confirm refund and reconciliation flows, and display other methods for customers who cannot use Apple Pay.
For digital goods in an iOS app, do not assume that integrating Apple Pay replaces App Store in-app purchase obligations. Review the current Apple App Review rules and your product category before implementing a payment flow. For physical goods and services, coordinate with your payment provider and assess the full card-payment cost, not merely Apple’s consumer-facing “no fee” statement.
Frequently asked questions
Is Apple Pay officially available in India now?
Yes. Apple’s India Apple Pay page is live and its supported-country list includes India as of 30 September 2026. Individual card eligibility is narrower than country availability.
Which Indian bank supports Apple Pay first?
Apple currently lists Axis Bank, specifically eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Check Apple’s issuer list for updates.
Will my RuPay card or UPI account work?
They are not listed as supported launch-day Apple Pay payment credentials in India. Apple Pay is initially an eligible card-based checkout, not UPI account linking.
Is Apple Pay free for customers?
Apple says it does not charge a separate Apple Pay purchase fee. Usual card issuer charges and terms can still apply.
Can I use Apple Pay on Apple Watch?
Yes, if the Watch is compatible and the eligible card has been added and verified for that device. Check Wallet & Apple Pay in the paired iPhone’s Watch app.
Can I pay at any UPI QR code?
No. At a shop, Apple Pay requires a compatible contactless card terminal and acceptance of the underlying card network. A UPI-only QR code is a different payment route.
Bottom line
Apple Pay has genuinely arrived in India, and it could make card checkout more convenient for eligible iPhone and Apple Watch users. The key limitation is easy to miss: at launch, this is an Axis Bank Visa/Mastercard credit-card rollout, not a nationwide UPI wallet or support for every bank card. If your card qualifies, setup is straightforward; if it does not, watch Apple’s live issuer list for expansion instead of changing your region or relying on an unofficial workaround.
